Artist Hidreley Diao has employed artificial intelligence to generate photo-realistic images of various historical figures, offering a contemporary perspective on their appearances. This initiative seeks to visualize how these individuals might look if they were alive in the present day, moving beyond traditional painted portraits.
One notable example from the project is Matau Tathonca, also known as Chief "Bull Bear." Diao's AI rendering of Bull Bear is inspired by an original painting created in the 1800s by Alfred Jacob Miller, an artist known for his depictions of Native Americans and fur trappers in the western United States. Miller's notes indicate that Bull Bear was the chief of the Oglala Sioux tribe and was murdered in 1841. The original portrait of Bull Bear is housed at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.
