President Zelensky's visit to Moldova underscores the heightened security risks in Eastern Europe due to the conflict in Ukraine, with increasing airspace violations posing a direct threat to Moldova's sovereignty and stability.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Chisinau on August 27 to attend Moldova's Independence Day celebrations, a visit that highlights increasing regional security concerns amid Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine. Zelensky was invited by Moldovan President Maia Sandu, and the two leaders are scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting before a joint meeting with Romanian President Nicusor Dan.
The visit occurs as Moldova has reported a rise in airspace violations. On the night prior to Zelensky's arrival, Moldova's Foreign Ministry stated that five drones had violated the country's airspace, issuing a warning about the risks posed by Russia's war. This follows a Russian drone strike on August 25 that temporarily closed the Vynohradivka border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova, marking the third such attack on a border crossing between the two nations in the last two weeks.
The region of Transnistria, an eastern part of Moldova controlled by Russian proxies since the early 1990s, remains heavily dependent on the Kremlin, adding another layer of geopolitical complexity to the situation.
