Ukrainian drone maker Vyriy Industries has launched its new Slavic reconnaissance drone, aiming to reduce reliance on Chinese technology for military operations. Ukrainian drone maker Vyriy Industries has introduced its new Slavic reconnaissance drone, positioning it as an alternative to Chinese commercial drones amidst domestic efforts to decrease reliance on Chinese technology. DJI Mavic drones, manufactured in China, have been widely used by Ukrainian forces for reconnaissance and for dropping explosives since before Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
The Slavic drone boasts a tactical operating range of up to 30 kilometers, which is approximately double that of a Mavic drone, according to Vyriy. This extended range is intended to allow reconnaissance crews to operate further from the front lines. Vyriy founder and CEO Oleksiy Babenko stated that the expanded "kill zone" necessitates greater tactical range than currently available commercial drones offer.
Vyriy claims that pilots already familiar with Mavic controls can be retrained on the Slavic drone in under a day. The drone's controller is also compatible with Ukraine's Delta battlefield management system and Kropyva tactical software. While the company has completed initial combat testing with seven Ukrainian military units and is preparing to scale up production, details regarding pricing and production targets were not disclosed, making it difficult to assess the Slavic drone's potential to replace commercial drones on a large scale.
