Two Russian drones struck near the supports of Kyiv's Southern Bridge on October 1, disrupting a key metro link between the city's eastern and western banks, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. The attack occurred around 12:20 p.m. local time while cars and a metro train were crossing the bridge. Videos circulating on social media showed a fire on the bridge and smoke rising above it. Following the strikes, traffic was halted as emergency services assessed the damage.
Earlier on October 1, a Russian drone hit a school in Kyiv's Solomianskyi district, causing a fire and partial damage to a wall, doors, and windows. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that children and teachers were in a shelter at the time and were unharmed. He condemned the attacks, saying, "Russian scumbags continue attacking life across our country, Ukrainian children, and our schools. Russia must be held fully accountable for this and receive a response to its strikes."
Additional Russian drone strikes hit a non-residential complex in Kyiv's Pecherskyi district and warehouse facilities in the Solomianskyi district. Kyiv has experienced frequent drone attacks throughout the week, with September 30 seeing one of the longest air raid alerts since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, lasting 12 hours and 44 minutes, and a total of 20 hours and 44 minutes of alerts that day. Russia has increased its drone attacks on Kyiv since late August, utilizing faster jet-powered drones that are more difficult for Ukrainian air defenses to intercept. The latest attacks follow a large-scale Russian assault on Kyiv's energy infrastructure the previous day, which resulted in power outages. Overnight on October 1, Russian attacks also impacted other parts of Ukraine, leading to at least 6 deaths and 38 injuries nationwide.
