Russia has lost approximately 1,544,260 troops in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022, according to a report from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on October 6.
The reported figure includes 1,540 Russian casualties sustained over the past day. In addition to personnel losses, the General Staff stated that Russia has lost 12,396 tanks, 25,494 armored combat vehicles, 158,551 vehicles and fuel tanks, 50,785 artillery systems, 2,184 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,688 air defense systems, 443 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 2,866 unmanned ground vehicles, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines.
Ukraine's General Staff has not disclosed its own losses during the conflict, citing operational secrecy. However, independent Western think-tank reports suggest that Russian casualties significantly exceed those of Ukraine. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated the ratio of Russian to Ukrainian losses to be "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1." A CSIS report from January 2026 indicated that Ukraine likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with an estimated 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
While Ukrainian officials rarely release casualty figures, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in February that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action since the war's commencement. The intensity of Russian drone attacks and ongoing fighting has made it challenging for Ukraine to retrieve and confirm the bodies of fallen soldiers.
