The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on Oct. 3 that Russia has lost approximately 1,538,950 troops since the start of its full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,560 casualties sustained by Russian forces in the preceding day.
According to the report, Russia's losses also encompass 12,391 tanks, 25,477 armored combat vehicles, 156,731 vehicles and fuel tanks, 50,637 artillery systems, 2,178 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,683 air defense systems, 443 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 2,824 unmanned ground vehicles, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines.
Ukraine's General Staff has withheld information regarding its own losses during the conflict, citing operational secrecy. Independent Western think-tank analyses suggest that Russian casualties significantly exceed those of Ukraine. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated the ratio of Russian to Ukrainian losses to be "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1." A January 2026 CSIS report indicated that Ukraine likely experienced between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with an estimated 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action (KIA).
While Ukrainian officials infrequently disclose casualty figures, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in an interview with France TV on Feb. 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action since the war began, in addition to a significant number of missing personnel. The intensity of Russian drone attacks and ongoing combat operations have made it exceptionally challenging for Ukraine to recover the bodies of fallen soldiers for DNA confirmation.
