The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on October 1 that Russia has lost approximately 1,535,870 troops since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,900 casualties suffered by Russian forces over the preceding day.
In addition to personnel losses, the report detailed significant equipment attrition for Russia, including 12,388 tanks, 25,464 armored combat vehicles, 155,887 vehicles and fuel tanks, 50,555 artillery systems, 2,174 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,683 air defense systems, 443 aircraft, and 356 helicopters. The Ukrainian General Staff has withheld its own casualty figures, citing operational secrecy.
Independent Western analyses suggest a stark imbalance in losses. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated in a January 2026 report that Ukraine likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action. CSIS projected the Russian to Ukraine casualty ratio to be "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1."
While official Ukrainian figures are rarely disclosed, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in February that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action, with a significant number also missing. The intensity of combat and Russian drone attacks has complicated efforts to recover and confirm the identities of fallen Ukrainian soldiers.
