Russia has lost approximately 1,532,500 troops in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022, according to a Sept. 29, 2026, report from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This figure includes 1,440 casualties sustained by Russian forces over the previous day.
In addition to personnel losses, the report detailed significant equipment attrition, including 12,388 tanks, 25,463 armored combat vehicles, 50,498 artillery systems, and 538,702 unmanned aerial vehicles. Russia has also lost 155,031 vehicles and fuel tanks, 2,169 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,681 air defense systems, 443 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 2,780 unmanned ground vehicles, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines.
The Ukrainian General Staff has not disclosed its own losses, citing operational secrecy. However, independent Western think-tank reports suggest Russian casualties significantly exceed those of Ukraine. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated in a January 2026 report that Ukraine likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Feb. 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action, in addition to significant numbers missing. The intensity of Russian drone attacks and ongoing fighting has made retrieving bodies for DNA confirmation extremely difficult for Ukraine.
