The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on August 31 that Russia has sustained approximately 1,488,200 troops lost since the full-scale invasion commenced on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,600 casualties suffered by Russian forces in the preceding day.
In addition to personnel losses, the report detailed significant equipment attrition for Russia, including 12,316 tanks, 25,255 armored combat vehicles, 141,920 vehicles and fuel tanks, 48,883 artillery systems, 2,079 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,597 air defense systems, 440 aircraft, 354 helicopters, 2,442 unmanned ground systems, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines.
Ukraine's General Staff has withheld its own casualty figures, citing operational secrecy. However, independent Western think-tank reports suggest Russian losses are substantially higher than Ukraine's, with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimating the ratio to be between 2:1 and 2.5:1. A January 2026 CSIS report projected Ukraine's casualties to be between 500,000 and 600,000 from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
While official figures from Ukraine are rarely disclosed, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in February that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action, with a considerably larger number missing in action. The difficulty in retrieving bodies for DNA confirmation due to intense fighting and drone activity complicates the precise accounting of Ukrainian losses.
