The United Kingdom has pledged a £100 million ($135 million) air defense package to Ukraine, including funding for Patriot missiles, air defense interceptors, artillery rounds, and drones. This aid is intended to bolster Ukraine's defenses against anticipated Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure as winter approaches.
The announcement follows recent visits to Kyiv by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Defense Secretary Wes Streeting, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for additional support. Streeting stated that both he and the Prime Minister "heard loud and clear" the importance of winter support, citing Putin's intention to use the season as a weapon through attacks on civilian and energy targets.
This latest commitment builds on previous pledges, including over 120,000 drones for Ukraine this year, with approximately 25,000 already delivered. These systems encompass interceptor drones, reconnaissance systems, and attack drones. London has also delivered its millionth round of large-caliber artillery ammunition and plans to send tens of thousands more in the coming months, with funding shared by Britain, Germany, Denmark, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.
The package coincides with the 36th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, co-chaired by the UK and Germany, which brings together nearly 50 countries providing military assistance. Furthermore, an agreement has been reached allowing British defense company MBDA to share classified information on UK-made components of the SCALP/Storm Shadow long-range cruise missile to facilitate local assembly lines in Ukraine. The UK and Ukraine also agreed to deepen cooperation on artificial intelligence technologies for developing new military capabilities.
