During this flight, SpaceX intends to deploy the first batch of 26 third-generation Starlink satellites into orbit. This test flight is crucial for SpaceX's long-term strategy, which includes retiring its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets in favor of Starship. Elon Musk has stated that Starship needs to fly reliably multiple times per week to conserve engineering and production resources.
SpaceX has made several modifications to the Super Heavy booster's hardware and software to address issues encountered in previous flights, particularly with engine relighting after stage separation. The company also implemented additional changes to the Starship heat shield, informed by the study of a recovered upper stage from Flight 13. While the Super Heavy booster will not be caught this time, the upper stage's flight on Flight 13 was successful, culminating in a simulated landing in the Indian Ocean without exploding upon impact.
