Factory, a startup developing AI agents for enterprise engineering teams, announced on Tuesday that it had raised $200 million in a funding round, more than tripling its valuation to $5 billion. The San Francisco-based company previously raised $150 million at a $1.5 billion valuation in April.
The funding round was backed by investors including Blackstone, Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Insight Partners, Evantic Capital, and Sound Ventures. Founded in 2023 by Matan Grinberg and Eno Reyes, Factory offers a platform that allows enterprises to use AI agents to build, test, and maintain software.
AI-assisted coding has become a widely adopted application of generative AI, attracting significant investment as businesses aim to accelerate software development and boost productivity. Factory competes in this space with platforms like Cognition, which recently raised $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation, and Cursor.
Matan Grinberg, co-founder and CEO of Factory, stated that enterprises are moving towards "software factories" that serve as the core operational foundation for entire software companies, rather than just individual coding agents. This funding round comes as companies like Coinbase and Block are reorganizing their workforces around AI to improve productivity. However, the rapid advancement of AI also raises concerns about potential misuse, prompting calls from industry executives for a slower pace of development.
