Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke expressed concerns that artificial intelligence tools can inadvertently increase workloads by enabling employees to generate excessive or incorrect material, which he termed 'slop grenades.' During an interview on 'The Knowledge Project' podcast, Lütke explained that these AI-generated outputs can be passed between colleagues, forcing recipients to expend additional effort evaluating or processing them.
Lütke cited an example where an AI-generated email was excessively long, necessitating the use of another AI tool to condense it. He questioned the utility of such processes, asking, 'Why did we invent decompression and recompression?'
Despite these concerns, Shopify has been actively adopting AI. The e-commerce company has introduced AI tools for its customer service agents. Internally, Lütke noted that Shopify's AI agent, River, is responsible for approximately half of the company's production code pull requests.
