In an interview with Fox News, Rubio indicated that elements in the world, specifically mentioning Iran, have openly threatened American interests globally. Tehran has strongly denied any involvement, calling the suggestions "unfounded and malicious speculations."
The incident at the RAF base in Gloucestershire, which has been used by US forces for strikes against Iran, was declared a major event after "suspicious vehicles" were reported early Sunday morning. Three vehicles were involved, leading to the evacuation of dozens of homes. Five UK nationals, all in their 20s and from London, were arrested on suspicion of terror offenses and have since been released on bail under stringent conditions.
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP), stated that officers are considering all angles, including the possibility that the activity was committed by proxies or individuals knowingly or unknowingly working on behalf of a foreign state. Rubio added that "a lot more news that'll come out on this in the days to come." The Iranian embassy in London "categorically reject[s] and strongly condemn[s]" any links to the incident.
RAF Fairford has served as a forward operating location for the US Air Force for decades, with US bombers recently taking off from the base for the Middle East. Iran had previously stated that "any base used for aggression against Iranian territory constitutes a legitimate target for our forces."
US President Donald Trump commented on the bail decision, stating he would not have released the individuals. Prime Minister Andy Burnham chaired a Cobra meeting to discuss the situation. As of Tuesday, a heavily guarded police cordon remained around the base, and residents of nearby villages were advised to stay indoors and not take photographs.
