Satellite companies, excluding SpaceX, are indicating a global shortage of launch capacity, despite recent increases in launch frequency led by SpaceX's Falcon 9. This perceived lack of capacity has led some operators to place early bets on newer launch providers. Germany's Isar Aerospace recently achieved its first successful orbital launch with its Spectrum rocket, delivering CubeSats to low-Earth orbit from Norway. This success is seen as a positive development for Europe's space sector, which is seeking alternatives to established providers like Arianespace and Avio.
Japanese satellite company Astroscale has signed two launch contracts with Isar Aerospace for upcoming missions, including one for its ELSA-M spacecraft, which aims to capture and deorbit a satellite from Eutelsat's OneWeb constellation. Astroscale also has a contract for the ADRAS-J2 mission, funded in part by the Japanese space agency, to remove a defunct Japanese rocket from orbit. These missions are crucial for demonstrating Astroscale's capabilities in the satellite servicing market.
Chris Blackerby, Astroscale's chief operating officer, stated that dedicated launches are essential for most of their missions, as rideshare options are often not suitable for their specific orbital requirements or payload sizes. He noted that while there is talk of abundant launch capacity, consistently reliable options are scarce, and that Isar's Spectrum rocket fits their budget, capacity needs, and requirement for a dedicated launch.
