Honda Motor is investing in Niron Magnetics, a U.S. startup that is commercializing rare-earth-free Iron Nitride permanent magnets. The investment, made through Honda Xcelerator Ventures, signals a growing trend of Japan-U.S. collaboration on critical minerals as China imposes restrictions on rare-earth exports.
Niron Magnetics' technology offers an alternative to conventional magnets that rely on rare earth materials, which are subject to supply chain constraints and market volatility. These rare-earth-free magnets are seen as a way to enhance performance, cost stability, and sustainability in electrified systems. The company's Iron Nitride magnet technology is applicable across a wide range of sectors, including automotive, robotics, industrial automation, AI and data center infrastructure, and consumer electronics.
Honda's investment is expected to support the continued commercialization of Niron's technology and help scale its manufacturing operations. Niron Magnetics has previously secured $33 million in funding from investors including GM Ventures and Stellantis Ventures, underscoring the automotive industry's interest in diversifying its supply chain with viable alternatives to rare-earth magnets.
According to Jonathan Rowntree, CEO of Niron Magnetics, the investment reflects the increasing focus on rare-earth-free magnet technology as manufacturers seek more resilient solutions. Mahito Shikama, Director and Executive Officer of Honda Motor, noted that Niron's innovative technology addresses the challenges posed by resource constraints and market fluctuations associated with rare earth metals, which are critical for most electric propulsion motors.
