Lab supply companies have been found to be selling antibodies using manipulated images, a practice that could significantly mislead researchers and waste valuable time and resources. Reese Richardson, a post-doctoral researcher at Northwestern University, discovered that images used to demonstrate the performance of these antibodies in lab experiments had undergone manipulations. These changes, which would typically lead to a paper's retraction in academic literature, ranged from removing background noise to copying and pasting data to fabricate results.
Richardson's more exhaustive search, in collaboration with Sholto David, revealed problematic manipulations in images used to market over 17,500 commercial antibodies from 16 different companies. Approximately 7 percent of the examined images displayed signs of manipulation, such as scrubbed background noise or repeated copying of data sections to obscure issues.
The consequences of this discovery are significant for the scientific community. When researchers purchase an antibody based on seemingly clear data, only to find it ineffective, they often assume the problem lies with their own experimental technique. This can lead to extensive troubleshooting, consuming time and money on experiments that are ultimately futile if the antibody itself is unreliable.
