Kernel deploys modular grain storage to aid Ukrainian farmers

Ukrainian agribusiness Kernel has acquired modular grain storage facilities with a total capacity of 40,000 tons, aiming to bolster crop storage capabilities amidst challenges to grain exports. The company is piloting these facilities, developed by a Ukrainian manufacturer at Kernel's request, as part of an effort to provide flexible and efficient storage solutions for both its own operations and other farmers.

The first modular unit was assembled in four days and subsequently filled with 3,400 metric tons of grain over the following two days. Kernel noted that these modular units occupy less space, can be installed on hard-surfaced sites, and are less susceptible to weather conditions compared to traditional grain storage methods. Their design allows for repeated assembly, disassembly, and relocation, offering significant mobility and adaptability.

Kernel stated that the modular storage can hold up to 3.5 times more grain than polymer bags, which typically hold 1,000 tons. The company, which operates one of the largest elevator networks in Ukraine, sees this initiative as a way to support the broader agricultural market by testing and refining solutions for Ukrainian manufacturers. This approach aims to provide field-tested solutions that can help preserve grain during critical periods and support producers' businesses. Other market participants have reportedly shown interest in the design.
