Hitachi Energy is set to invest $528 million in a new electrical transformer factory in Gallman, Mississippi, marking its largest single investment in expanding its U.S. manufacturing capabilities. The new facility, slated to commence operations in 2029, is designed to produce mid-range transformers crucial for powering data centers, semiconductor plants, and other industrial facilities with significant energy requirements.
This expansion comes as the U.S. grapples with a deficit in critical electrical infrastructure, including transformers, which is hindering efforts to meet record-high power demand driven by the technology sector's growth and the electrification of buildings and transportation. The Gallman plant will be approximately double the size of Hitachi Energy's existing facility in Crystal Springs, Mississippi.
Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO of Hitachi Energy, highlighted the importance of these transformers in bridging the gap between transmission infrastructure and industrial production. The investment is part of a larger $1.5 billion commitment by Hitachi Energy to increase its production capacity within the United States. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized the necessity of such components for building out the nation's electrical infrastructure.
