DoorDash is significantly expanding its presence in the food delivery and dining sector through a strategic partnership and acquisition of Wonder, a food tech company founded by Marc Lore. The deal, announced Tuesday, is valued at a total of $425 million.
DoorDash will acquire Wonder's Grubhub Campus Dining business for $300 million. This business operates at 450 colleges and universities and DoorDash aims to expand it into stadiums and hotels. Additionally, DoorDash is injecting $125 million into Wonder's ongoing $650 million Series D funding round, which was announced in July.
Wonder, which aims to create a "fully autonomous food system," operates ghost kitchen food halls that allow customers to order from various restaurants under one roof. The company, founded by Lore whose previous ventures were acquired by Amazon and Walmart, has been rapidly expanding its physical footprint, with 157 locations and plans to enter Texas in early 2027. Last year, Wonder acquired Grubhub for $650 million and also purchased several New York City-based restaurant chains, including Mighty Quinn's BBQ and Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken.
