Germany has officially commenced production of over 5,000 medium- and long-range drones for Ukraine, according to reports from German outlet Handelsblatt. The initiative is part of a joint German-Ukrainian venture valued at 300 million euros ($349 million), with completion expected by mid-2027.
The partnership, established in February 2026 between the German-American defense company Auterion and Ukrainian drone producer Airlogix, will see Auterion manage the drones' software and operating systems, while Airlogix handles the physical production. These drones are designed to incorporate artificial intelligence to counter Russian electronic disruption attempts.
Auterion CEO Lorenz Meier stated that Germany now possesses a production line for "affordable precision weapons in large quantities," capable of delivering "tried and tested systems this year" at a cost and speed that enables large stockpiles for deterrence. The production will include two models, one for medium-range flights and another with a range of up to 1,500 kilometers.
Airlogix CEO Vitalii Kolesnichenko highlighted the synergy of the partnership, combining battle-proven missiles, Auterion's autonomous software, and Germany's industrial capabilities. This development aligns with Germany's increasing role as a key provider of aid and a partner in Ukraine's defense technology sector.
This announcement follows Ukraine's intensified use of long-range drones against Russian military and energy infrastructure. President Volodymyr Zelensky has set a goal of launching 1,000 such drones daily against Russia, a warning that has led to flight cancellations at Moscow airports.
