Russia hopes for US-mediated Ukraine peace talks to resume

Russia expressed hope that U.S.-mediated peace talks to end the war in Ukraine will resume soon, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. No direct talks between Russia and Ukraine have occurred since February, but U.S. envoys, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, visited Moscow and Kyiv recently. Peskov stated Moscow would not publicly discuss settlement specifics but confirmed a "confirmed political will" to resume talks and ongoing contact with American counterparts.

This comes as the European Union stated Russia is unwilling to pursue a just and lasting peace, with European Commission spokespeople noting Moscow's lack of inclination. Representatives from France, Germany, and the U.K. also attended the recent Kyiv meetings. President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted Europe's crucial role in peace negotiations, emphasizing that the security of the entire continent is at stake.

A significant gap persists between Russia and Ukraine regarding the terms of a settlement, with Kyiv rejecting Moscow's territorial demands. The issue of prisoner exchanges between Russia and the U.S. remains a constant point of discussion, with Russia having released one American prisoner, Robert Gilman, at President Trump's request last month. The two countries have engaged in prisoner swaps at various points, with a notable exchange in August 2024 involving eight prisoners returning to the West and 16 individuals released from Russian and Belarusian jails.
