Elon Musk tapped to co-lead US warfare study

Musk will be joined by Palmer Luckey, CEO of defense tech company Anduril, and Newt Gingrich, former Republican speaker of the House. The project is set to run for 120 days and will conclude with an unclassified public report of its recommendations.

The defense department stated that the project will examine how the US military can utilize new technologies and operate in novel environments, including subterranean depths and space. Hegseth noted the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, autonomy, directed energy, and robotics, emphasizing their profound impact on the character of warfare and the need for the US to maintain global dominance.

This role represents Musk's re-engagement with government efforts, following his controversial tenure leading the "department of government efficiency" (Doge) over a year ago. Unlike his previous role, Project Meridian's scope is described as less time-consuming for the tech mogul. Both Musk and Luckey have existing defense department contracts through their respective companies, Anduril and SpaceX.
