Key facts
- China aims for the initial large-scale application of all-solid-state batteries by 2030.
- The plan was jointly issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and six other government agencies.
- Solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes, offering potential safety and energy density advantages over liquid-electrolyte lithium-ion batteries.
- China's solid-state battery market is projected to grow from $42.5 million in 2025 to $384.8 million by 2030.
- Domestic manufacturers like CATL and BYD are investing heavily in solid-state battery research and development.
China has set a goal for the large-scale application of solid-state batteries by 2030 as part of a new national industry blueprint for the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030). The plan, jointly issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and six other government agencies, aims to accelerate technological innovation and strengthen China's competitiveness in the electric vehicle sector.
According to the document, efforts will focus on improving basic research and core technologies, enhancing the industrial system, and raising the quality of trade and investment cooperation. China seeks steady growth in its new battery industry, with significant progress expected in new battery systems, including the move toward initial large-scale deployment of all-solid-state batteries by 2030.
Solid-state batteries, which use solid electrolytes instead of flammable liquid ones, are considered safer and potentially offer higher energy density than conventional lithium-ion batteries. Sun Xiaohong, former secretary-general of the automotive branch of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products, noted that while China has strong manufacturing capabilities, it needs to bolster fundamental research and core technologies to maintain long-term competitiveness.
The plan calls for faster breakthroughs in commercialization technologies, focusing on improving ionic conductivity, cycle stability, and cost efficiency, as well as advancing key materials and processes. Market research platform MarketsandMarkets projects China's solid-state battery market to grow from $42.5 million in 2025 to $384.8 million by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of 44.4%, significantly outpacing the global average. Major domestic manufacturers like CATL and BYD are reportedly accelerating commercialization through substantial research and development investments.
