China is rapidly advancing electric vehicle charging technology, with Geely unveiling a new LFP battery that can charge from 10 to 70 percent in just 4.5 minutes. This development significantly outpaces current US charging speeds, where the most powerful chargers typically top out at 250 kW to 350 kW, with some newer models reaching 400 kW or 600 kW. Geely's battery utilizes AI for predictive thermal management, maintaining an average pack temperature of 55°C and a peak of 65°C during charging, and claims to extend battery life by 20 percent through specialized micro-pulses. This innovation surpasses recent announcements from competitors like BYD, which debuted a battery charging 10-70% in 5 minutes, and CATL, which announced a battery capable of charging 10-80% in 3 minutes 44 seconds. While US automakers like Hyundai, Kia, and Porsche have EVs with 800 V architectures, their charging speeds are limited, and megawatt charging is largely reserved for heavy-duty vehicles. ChargePoint's CEO, Rick Willmer, noted that combining two of their 600 kW chargers could deliver 1.2 megawatts, but current connectors like NACS or CCS1 cannot handle such power, with MCS connectors being the future roadmap.
