Audible, facing increased competition in the audiobook market, has launched three new technology-driven features designed to deepen listener engagement. These enhancements include a character guide, interactive stories powered by generative AI, and a feature that provides additional context on locations and landmarks mentioned in books.
The character guide aims to help listeners keep track of who is speaking during an audiobook, displaying real-time speaker identification and offering spoiler-free character cards with narrator biographies. Users will eventually be able to ask questions about the unfolding story through this guide. Initially, this feature will be available for Audible Originals like "Dracula" and George Orwell's "1984," as well as the forthcoming "Exoplanet" by Benjamin Percy and executive producer Andy Weir.
The interactive stories feature, also debuting with "Dracula" and "Exoplanet," uses generative AI to allow listeners to converse with characters. In "Dracula," listeners can interact with Renfield, who will respond in real time to the listener's input, with creators involved to ensure the stories remain faithful to the original book's narrative and characters.
The feature providing additional imagery and bonus information will first be implemented in Sheehan Quirke's "The Cultural Tutor," a book focused on making culture accessible through lessons on history, art, and philosophy. This particular feature is intended to offer context on elements like geography and architecture.
These updates come as the audiobook market continues to grow, with U.S. sales reaching $2.43 billion in 2025. Factors contributing to this growth include the widespread use of smartphones and increasingly busy lifestyles that make traditional reading a luxury. The popularity of platforms like TikTok's "BookTok" community has also boosted interest in genres like fiction, sci-fi, and thrillers.
Audible's Chief Content Officer, Rachel Ghiazza, stated that these new features represent a significant step in advancing audio storytelling, inviting listeners into stories in unprecedented ways. She expressed excitement about further developing these capabilities in collaboration with creators.
