Apple is intensifying its efforts in the smart home market with the introduction of HomeView, a new smart home hub unveiled on Tuesday. The device is designed to serve as a central control point for various smart home gadgets and offers a range of functionalities including FaceTime calls, music playback, video viewing, and photo slideshows.
The HomeView, priced at $299, features a 7-inch display and is shaped like a cuboid version of the HomePod. It is available in two configurations: one for countertop placement and another for wall mounting. The hub includes a front-facing FaceTime camera, microphones, and speakers integrated into its base.
Pre-loaded with several Apple applications such as Calendar, Messages, Photos, and Music, HomeView aims to reduce the need for users to interact with their iPhones for everyday tasks. Apple envisions the device being particularly useful in kitchens, where users can access recipes, watch videos, or manage appointments hands-free.
A key feature of HomeView is its ability to recognize individual household members through its updated Siri AI assistant. Upon identification, the screen can personalize information displayed, showing messages, contacts, calendar appointments, and preferred apps specific to that user. The interface dynamically adjusts as different family members approach the device.
With HomeView, Apple directly challenges established players like Amazon's Echo Show and Google's Nest Hub. Apple's previous ventures into the smart home market, such as the HomePod, have seen mixed success, making HomeView a critical opportunity to strengthen its position by integrating home controls with its broader product ecosystem.
Reports had previously indicated delays in the development of HomeView, partly due to challenges with Siri AI, which had also impacted Apple's wider smart home initiatives. This launch may represent the initial phase of Apple's expanded smart home strategy, with future possibilities including more advanced devices with robotic arms, as suggested by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
