Volvo has significantly upgraded the battery capacity in its 2028 XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrid SUVs, aiming to more than double their real-world electric range. The XC60 T8 will now feature a 37.9 kWh usable battery pack, up from 14.9 kWh in the previous refresh, extending its EPA-estimated electric driving range to 78 miles (125 km). The larger XC90 T8 also receives the same 37.9 kWh battery, providing an all-electric range of 73 miles (117 km).
Beyond the powertrain enhancements, the refreshed SUVs will sport updated styling, including revised "Thor's Hammer" headlights with matrix LED projectors and a new front grille. Inside, a new ventilated leather interior option is available, and both models will feature an 11.2-inch infotainment system powered by Android Automotive OS, enhanced with a Gemini personal assistant for conversational voice control. Volvo reports that the Gemini assistant performs better than previous versions.
The XC60, Volvo's bestselling model, will also begin production at Volvo's plant in South Carolina, in addition to its Swedish facility, a move influenced by the current tariff regime. Håkan Samuelsson, president & CEO at Volvo Cars, stated that these long-range plug-in hybrids build on the legacy of the XC60 and XC90, contributing to Volvo's strongest electrified offering in the mid-size SUV segment and paving a path to full electrification for customers.
