Volvo XC40 gets subtle styling, tech updates for 2028

The most noticeable exterior changes include new front and rear LED light clusters, which feature a more minimalist interpretation of Volvo's signature "Thor's Hammer" daytime running lights. Volvo's designers have also subtly reshaped the vehicle's corners to reduce its overall dimensions, presenting a less aggressive and more socially aware approach compared to the trend of larger SUVs.

Inside, the most significant upgrade is an 11.2-inch infotainment touchscreen that integrates Google's Gemini AI as a voice assistant. Volvo, an early adopter of Google's Android Automotive OS, continues its partnership with enhanced AI capabilities. A new interior option includes cardamom leather paired with open-grain wood trim. Volvo has also bolstered the XC40's safety features with a new suite of front, rear, and corner radars, an upgraded forward-looking camera, new ultrasonic sensors, and revised software for an improved 360-degree parking camera view.

The revised 2028 Volvo XC40 is slated to begin production later this year and will be available for sale next year. A revised electric EX40 model will also receive similar styling updates, though it will not be offered in the US.
