Ukrainian drones targeted the Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery in Yaroslavl, Russia, causing a fire and resulting in one death and 27 injuries. This attack is part of Ukraine's ongoing campaign to disrupt Russia's energy infrastructure and worsen its domestic fuel crisis.
The attack on a major Russian oil refinery highlights Ukraine's strategy to cripple Russia's energy sector, potentially exacerbating domestic fuel shortages and impacting Russia's war-funding capabilities.
Ukrainian drones targeted Russia's Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery in Yaroslavl, one of the country's largest processing facilities, and the Moscow region. Eyewitnesses reported fires at the plant, with footage geolocated to the Slavneft-YANOS refinery. The refinery processes around 15 million tons of oil annually, producing gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation kerosene, and other products. Yaroslavl Oblast Governor Mikhail Evraev confirmed a drone threat in the region, stating that one person was killed and 27 others were injured. In the Moscow region, Russian air defenses reportedly shot down two drones heading toward the capital. Ukraine has intensified its campaign to reduce domestic fuel supply in Russia, viewing Russian energy infrastructure as legitimate military targets that fund Moscow's war effort.
