Ukrainian drones targeted Russia's Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery in Yaroslavl, one of the country's largest processing facilities, and the Moscow region overnight on August 28. Eyewitnesses reported fires at the plant, with footage geolocated to the Slavneft-YANOS refinery in the Dyadkovo district. This marks the eighth attack on the refinery in 2026. The Slavneft-YANOS refinery, situated approximately 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow, processes around 15 million tons of oil annually, producing gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation kerosene, and other products. It is the primary refining asset of Slavneft, jointly controlled by Russian state energy companies Rosneft and Gazprom. Yaroslavl Oblast Governor Mikhail Evraev confirmed a drone threat in the region, stating that one person was killed and 27 others were injured. Ten individuals were hurt when drone debris fell onto a bus, and debris also impacted industrial infrastructure, residential areas, and shops. Traffic towards Moscow was restricted, and public transport routes were adjusted. In the Moscow region, Russian air defenses reportedly shot down two drones heading toward the capital, according to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. Separately, a column of black smoke was observed over Pavlovsky Posad, east of Moscow, though the cause of the fire was unclear.
