Ukraine reportedly strikes major Russian oil refinery in Krasnodar Krai

Ukraine's military reportedly launched an attack on Russia's Krasnodar Krai overnight, striking the Afipsky Oil Refinery, according to Russian Telegram media channels. The refinery is a significant oil processing facility in southern Russia, handling approximately 6.25 million tons of crude annually, which constitutes about 2% of Russia's total refining output. Photos and videos circulating on social media appear to show a large fire at the facility, with air raid alerts active in the region during the incident.

Elsewhere, Russian air defense was reportedly active near the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in Rostov Oblast, though no damage was immediately confirmed. The Kyiv Independent has stated it cannot immediately verify the reports, and Ukraine's military has not yet commented on the alleged attack. The extent of any damage and the weaponry used remain unclear, though Ukraine has frequently employed long-range drone strikes against Russian refineries.

These attacks on energy infrastructure are part of Ukraine's strategy to disrupt fuel supplies to the Russian military and diminish revenues that finance Moscow's war efforts. In recent months, Ukraine has reportedly shifted its focus to targeting Russia's e-commerce industry, with prior attacks on oil refineries having slowed. Notably, on August 22, Ukrainian forces reportedly struck the Novokuibyshevskyi oil refinery and an Ozon logistics center in Samara Oblast.
