Ukrainian Chess Federation urges probe into presidential aide over FIDE role with Russian

The Ukrainian Chess Federation (UCF) has issued a strong protest against Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to the Presidential Office, for accepting a vice president position at the International Chess Federation (FIDE) alongside a former Russian minister. The federation stated on September 28 that Podolyak's actions, particularly during Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, undermine national sovereignty and Ukraine's image. The UCF has called for an investigation by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), labeling his actions as 'treason against Ukraine's national interests.'

Timur Turlov, a Moscow-born Kazakh businessman who is currently sanctioned by Ukraine, was elected as FIDE's new president on September 26. He subsequently appointed Podolyak and Russia's former sports minister, Pavel Kolobkov, as vice presidents. Turlov had previously invited Podolyak to join his team, acknowledging the strength of Ukrainian chess internationally even during difficult times.

Podolyak responded to Turlov on X (formerly Twitter), expressing interest in international federations moving beyond political intrigue and emphasizing Ukraine's significant role in global sports. However, the UCF clarified on September 28 that Podolyak was not authorized as a representative, citing his lack of ties to the Ukrainian chess community and the federation. The UCF also pointed out that Kolobkov cannot hold the position due to the suspension of the Russian Chess Federation's membership in FIDE.

Alexander Kamyshin, president of the UCF and a former strategic industries minister, leads the federation. Turlov is the founder, CEO, and major shareholder of Freedom Holding Corp, a retail brokerage and investment bank valued at over $10 billion as of September 2026. Turlov renounced his Russian citizenship in June 2022 and has been under Ukrainian sanctions since October 2022.
