A confrontation reportedly broke out in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka, a village on the outskirts of Kyiv, where local residents gathered near a private house with National Guard soldiers present on November 2.
Ukraine's national police said it was at the scene and that reports people were being unlawfully detained or that someone had died were false. It said officers were dispatched after a private ambulance crew called to report it had been prevented from reaching a man inside the building. On arrival, officers found soldiers from a National Guard unit near the house and local residents gathered outside, according to the statement.
In an update, the National Guard said people requiring medical attention had been taken from the building by ambulance about two hours before its statement was issued. It said details about their injuries or medical conditions would be provided later and repeated that no deaths had occurred.
Videos circulating on social media appeared to show a tense standoff, with people demanding access to the building and alleging that people inside were being detained and injured. Several Telegram channels claimed armed men were holding around 40 people hostage in the basement, and unverified reports alleged one person had been killed.
The circumstances remained unclear as authorities continued to investigate, and the Kyiv Independent said it could not independently verify the claims circulating on social media.
