The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on September 22 that Russia has lost approximately 1,520,880 troops since the beginning of its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,230 casualties suffered by Russian forces over the preceding day.
According to the report, Russia has also lost 12,364 tanks, 25,374 armored combat vehicles, 152,173 vehicles and fuel tanks, 50,184 artillery systems, 2,151 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,663 air defense systems, 442 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 2,720 unmanned ground vehicles, 529,134 operational-tactical UAVs, 5,111 cruise missiles, 35 ships and boats, two submarines, and 4,733 pieces of special equipment.
Ukraine's General Staff has not disclosed its own losses during the full-scale invasion, citing operational secrecy. Independent Western think-tank reports, such as one from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in January 2026, agree that Russian casualties significantly surpass Ukraine's losses, estimating the ratio to be "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1." The CSIS report suggested Ukraine likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
Ukrainian officials rarely disclose casualty figures. In February, President Volodymyr Zelensky told France TV that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action since the war's start, with many more missing in action. The intensity of Russian drone attacks and fighting has made it difficult for Ukraine to retrieve bodies for DNA confirmation.
