Ukraine says Russia lost 1.5 million troops since Feb. 2022

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on September 20 that Russia has lost approximately 1,517,990 troops since the start of its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,560 Russian casualties reported over the preceding day.

In addition to personnel losses, the report detailed significant equipment losses for Russia, including 12,356 tanks, 25,361 armored combat vehicles, 151,345 vehicles and fuel tanks, 50,067 artillery systems, 2,146 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,659 air defense systems, 442 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 2,695 unmanned ground vehicles, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines.

Ukraine's General Staff has withheld information on its own losses, citing operational secrecy. However, independent Western think-tank reports, such as one from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in January 2026, suggest that Russian casualties are substantially higher than Ukraine's, estimating the ratio to be between 2:1 and 2.5:1. The CSIS report projected that Ukraine likely sustained between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 of those potentially being killed in action.
