Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, is reportedly evaluating a potential investment in Texas to further expand its chip production capabilities in the United States. This prospective investment would be separate from the substantial $265 billion TSMC has already committed to its operations in Arizona.
Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the plans are not yet finalized. The development was initially reported by Taiwanese media, citing unnamed industry sources.
In July, TSMC announced an additional $100 billion investment in its Arizona operations, bringing the total planned investment there to $265 billion. At that time, Chief Executive C.C. Wei stated that the company anticipated building "probably additional four or more fabs" in Arizona, encompassing both front-end and back-end facilities. The Arizona operations are expected to eventually include 12 fabrication and advanced packaging facilities, along with an R&D center. TSMC's Chief Financial Officer Wendell Huang had also confirmed in July that the company intended to continue investing in the United States.
