Canadian politicians dismiss Trump's Lake Ontario renaming threat amid trade dispute

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to rename Lake Ontario to "Lake America" as part of an escalating trade dispute with Canada. Trump announced the proposal via social media, stating the U.S. was giving "serious consideration" to the change, accompanied by an image of the lake's map with the name altered.

Canadian politicians largely shrugged off the threat. Ontario Premier Doug Ford told CBS News that while Trump has the prerogative to name it whatever he wishes, it will "always be Lake Ontario here in Canada." Canada's Minister of Industry, Mélanie Joly, stated, "We'll always call it Lake Ontario. Period." Minister for Internal Trade Dominic LeBlanc indicated the government would not respond to "daily social media posts" and is focused on its economy and maintaining a constructive relationship with the U.S.

The renaming threat comes amid heightened trade tensions. The U.S. has imposed new tariffs on certain Canadian goods, such as alcohol and construction materials, with further tariffs threatened on auto parts and steel. Canada has retaliated with tariffs as high as 50% on American goods, including steel, dairy, and electronics, set to take effect in September.

This is not the first time Trump has proposed renaming natural landmarks. Last year, he ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the Gulf of America, and Mount Denali in Alaska was renamed Mount McKinley.
