President Donald Trump is distributing $500 checks and a letter to nearly a million Americans who were enrolled in Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance plans and did not receive taxpayer subsidies. The US Treasury is sending the payments to over 950,000 individuals across 30 states that use the federal health insurance exchange.
In the accompanying letter, Trump states that the Biden administration "overcharged" enrollees to fund HealthCare.gov and that these surplus funds are now being returned. He refers to the payments as a "Historic Action" and a one-time $500 refund from the "Obamacare 'Premium Tax.'"
Trump also highlighted his administration's efforts to lower healthcare costs, including prescription drug discounts, investments in rural healthcare, expanded Health Savings Accounts for Obamacare users, and restored price transparency. He previously announced plans for these refund checks in early September.
The distribution of these checks comes approximately one month before the midterm elections. Trump has also promised a $5,000 "Trump dividend" to every American adult if Republicans maintain control of Congress.
