Tesla's recent private Cybercab event provided new details about the autonomous vehicle, including restrictions on young passengers and specific safety features. Unlike typical large-scale, livestreamed launches, this event was notably subdued, with CEO Elon Musk not appearing to speak during a brief keynote.
Key information was disseminated through company PDFs and updated terms of service for its "Robotaxi" app, rather than a public announcement. Among the most significant details is that Tesla will not permit children under the age of 13 to ride in the Cybercab, though minors aged 8 to 17 are allowed in the "Robotaxi" Model Y SUVs. All passengers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult in both vehicle types.
In terms of safety, the Cybercab will feature manual door releases, a response to previous criticisms of Tesla's electronic door latches. In the event of a crash, the vehicle is designed to automatically unlock doors, deploy airbags, activate hazard lights, disable the high-voltage battery, and initiate a two-way connection with Tesla's support team. Notably, the Cybercab lacks standard LATCH anchors for child seats, requiring them to be secured with a seat belt.
Tesla is also employing a brake-by-wire system, eliminating the need for a hydraulic system to cut costs, a strategy also seen in the Cybertruck's steer-by-wire technology. Additionally, the Cybercab's windows have a limited opening function, and its USB-C ports are capable of delivering 90W of power.
