Tanzania's ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party has selected Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi as its nominee for the position of vice president. The announcement was made by party Secretary General Asha-Rose Migiro late on Wednesday.

This nomination follows the unexpected resignation of the incumbent Vice President, Emmanuel John Nchimbi, who is set to leave office on September 4. Nchimbi had served since November of the previous year. His departure comes after facing criticism for remarks he made regarding the constitution in the preceding month.

Migiro informed reporters that the party's National Executive Committee unanimously approved Ndejembi for the vice presidential nomination. She stated that the process requires his name to be submitted to Parliament for approval before he can be sworn in.

Additionally, Migiro announced that Nchimbi has been expelled from the ruling party due to conduct that violated disciplinary and ethical regulations, though the specific nature of this conduct was not detailed.

Last month, Nchimbi had urged Tanzanians to advocate for a new constitution aimed at fostering development in dignity and human worth, not solely material and economic progress. President Samia Suluhu Hassan secured nearly 98% of the vote in the previous year's presidential election, an election that was reportedly marred by violence.
