South Korea's economy is showing signs of improvement, bolstered by strong AI-driven exports and investment, particularly in the semiconductor sector. Despite global uncertainties, the KOSPI index surged over 4.6% following OpenAI's new model launch.

The surge in South Korean shares and the strengthening won highlight the significant impact of AI advancements on global technology supply chains and investor sentiment, particularly benefiting economies reliant on semiconductor exports.
South Korean shares experienced a significant surge, with the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) climbing over 4.6 percent on Monday. This rally was primarily driven by renewed optimism surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), fueled by the launch of OpenAI's new-generation model, GPT-6 Astra. The launch is expected to boost demand for memory chips, a key export for South Korea.
The KOSPI closed up 308.18 points, or 4.61 percent, reaching 6,995.39 and extending its winning streak to three sessions. The index opened 3.34 percent higher as investors reacted positively to the news.
Analysts noted that despite a mixed performance in major U.S. tech and software shares on Friday, the launch of OpenAI's Astra model, which could usher in an era of artificial general intelligence (AGI), significantly boosted investor sentiment. The Korean won also strengthened against the U.S. dollar.
Earlier reports indicated that South Korea's economy was improving due to strong AI-driven exports and investment, despite global uncertainties. Exports, particularly semiconductors, saw a substantial year-on-year increase in August, and facility investment grew significantly, boosted by spending in the semiconductor sector.
