Speaking on CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday, Kennedy told host Margaret Brennan that "there ought to be a rule" against using public money for personal political ads. He recalled his previous criticism of former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for spending $220 million on ads about herself.
Brennan highlighted a new 30-second commercial airing on major networks that prominently features Trump, with a voice praising him and the ad concluding with "paid for by the US government." Kennedy responded that "no public official, including President Trump or Kristi Noem or John Kennedy, should spend public money … on private ads for themselves." He added, "I think there ought to be a rule that you can’t – well, there probably is a rule – you can’t spend public money to promote yourself."
Kennedy's remarks touched upon arguments made by Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin, who suggested that government employees working on the pro-Trump ad or using government resources for it may have violated the Hatch Act, which prohibits partisan campaign activities by federal employees. The ad itself, created for Trump's 2024 campaign, includes footage of Trump speaking about "demolishing the deep state" and "casting out the communists, Marxists and fascists," with cheers from a crowd, indicating it was recorded during a campaign rally.
The ad was also broadcast nationwide on Saturday during a college football game and aired on Fox News Sunday. It was previously posted on Trump's Truth Social account and played on giant screens during the 2024 Republican National Convention on July 18, where it was identified as material provided by the Republican National Committee.
At the end of the interview, Kennedy also voiced his opposition to naming public buildings after politicians while they are alive, noting that his home state has a statute against it.
