Recent Republican efforts to hold Smith accountable have focused on records obtained by his investigators, including phone call logs from several Republican senators and texts from 44 US lawmakers. House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan referred Smith to the Justice Department, alleging false statements were made about the nature of the phone records, which Smith's lawyers stated did not contain conversation content and were necessary for investigating Trump's pressure campaign. Additionally, Trump's Justice Department is reportedly scrutinizing Smith's investigation into Trump's retention of classified documents.
