The rescue mission, which had been called off in August, was an experimental attempt by Katalyst to gather data on Swift before its eventual reentry into Earth's atmosphere.
Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee stated that the mission's rushed nine-month development contributed to Link's initial uncontrollable spin, which consumed precious fuel. Despite the setback, the company saw value in the attempt for future satellite servicing operations. NASA had paid Katalyst $30 million for the mission, viewing it as a low-risk experiment.
Launched in 2004, Swift's orbit has been shortened by intense solar storms, leading NASA to anticipate its reentry between October and the end of the year. The space agency had resumed observations with Swift after a temporary halt to conserve power. Katalyst is now developing a new spacecraft designed to potentially extend the life of the 36-year-old Hubble Space Telescope, with Lee noting that satellite servicing is expected to become more common.
