Business Insider, in collaboration with Plant-A Insights Group, has released its list of America's Most Innovative Businesses for 2027. The ranking identifies 500 large U.S. corporations that demonstrate significant innovation through their investments in research and development, the impact of their patents, and their reputation among industry peers.
The methodology involved screening over 4,000 publicly traded U.S. companies. To be eligible, companies had to be independent legal entities, headquartered in the U.S., and publicly listed on the NYSE or Nasdaq since at least 2020. A crucial part of the evaluation included a large-scale nationwide survey conducted between April and October 2025, where over 67,000 U.S. professionals provided more than 260,000 peer-to-peer evaluations based on perceived innovativeness, including the adoption of new technologies and artificial intelligence.
Patent data from January 2020 to December 2025 was analyzed for forward citations, non-patent citations, industry reach, absolute patent volume, and growth in patent intensity. Financial metrics from SEC Form 10-K filings between 2020 and 2025 were examined to measure R&D investment relative to revenue and industry medians. Companies implicated in significant corporate wrongdoing between August 1, 2024, and August 1, 2026, were excluded from the ranking.
