Reddit to reduce reliance on karma with AI moderation tools

The platform is expanding the testing of its Rules Hub, a tool that utilizes large language models (LLMs) to interpret and enforce community rules, better handling nuance and edge cases. Initially used by over 700 communities, Rules Hub will become available to all new communities and eventually all existing ones later this year.

Reddit stated that these advancements in abuse prevention systems are intended to allow communities to be more open, making it easier for moderators to welcome new members with confidence. The company also highlighted that these product updates are part of a broader strategy to convert its substantial base of weekly active users into daily users.

In addition to Rules Hub, Reddit is enhancing other moderation tools that assist users in understanding community rules and setting custom flair. The company also plans to update its legacy desktop site, Old Reddit, by migrating moderator workflows to its newer infrastructure.

These developments follow Reddit's second-quarter earnings call, where executives reported strong revenue of $805 million and earnings per share of $1.25, exceeding estimates. However, the company's stock experienced a decline due to what CEO Steve Huffman termed 'choppy' search referral traffic.
