Nissan is implementing AI-powered cameras in its Canton, Mississippi, assembly plant to monitor how workers perform tasks. The system tracks body angles and movements to identify potentially unsafe positions, aiming to improve worker safety and reduce repetitive strain injuries.
Nissan's use of AI cameras highlights a growing trend of technology being applied to enhance worker safety in manufacturing, potentially reducing injuries and associated costs, while also raising questions about workplace surveillance.
Nissan has introduced AI-powered cameras at its Canton, Mississippi, assembly plant to monitor factory workers' movements, focusing on improving safety and preventing injuries. The system analyzes body angles and positions to identify potentially hazardous movements, flagging risks for managers to coach employees, reallocate tasks, or redesign workstations.
Initially evaluated for manufacturing efficiency and training, the safety benefits of the AI technology emerged as the primary advantage, according to Victor Taylor, Nissan's divisional vice president of manufacturing for the Americas. The system helps address challenges with an aging workforce by preserving the know-how of long-term employees while mitigating the physical demands of their jobs.
Chi Amaechi, a Nissan process engineer, explained that the AI monitors body angles against a 'golden cycle' standard for each job, identifying when an employee bends too far or holds an unsafe position. This proactive monitoring replaces less consistent manual observations. The technology has reportedly contributed to approximately $34 million in safety and health-related savings at the Canton plant.
Nissan plans to deploy this system at its Smyrna, Tennessee, assembly plant after completing the rollout in Canton and is evaluating its application at powertrain facilities. The company has also seen recent financial improvements, reporting its first quarterly net profit in two years, aided by cost reductions and stronger sales.
