Quartermaster, a startup focused on ocean surveillance, has successfully closed a $140 million Series B funding round, significantly larger than its previous $43 million Series A in May. The company utilizes specialized hardware, dubbed "SmartMast," which integrates cameras and radios onto ship masts to capture and relay real-time maritime data. This technology aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of maritime activity than traditional Automatic Identification System (AIS) pings.
The funding round was preempted by Insight Partners, a venture firm specializing in software, and also saw participation from defense-focused firm Overmatch Ventures and existing investors like First Round Capital. Additionally, investment bank Stifel provided a $40 million debt facility.
Neil Sobin, Quartermaster's founder and CEO, attributed the strong investor interest to global events, such as the conflict in Iran and resulting shipping disruptions, which have highlighted the need for enhanced maritime awareness. He stated that these events have driven conviction in the company's core thesis and created an opportunity to seize.
Nick Sinai, managing director at Insight Partners, emphasized Quartermaster's role in building a distributed network for ocean data, noting the demand for real-time maritime information. Quartermaster's SmartMast system records substantial amounts of data daily, with applications ranging from collision avoidance and shipping lane congestion analysis to aiding in maritime rescues. The company is actively engaging with the maritime industry to identify new uses for its data.
Quartermaster has deployed its SmartMast system on over 650 vessels across 25 countries and is preparing to equip entire fleets. To meet the growing demand, the startup has doubled its manufacturing capacity and is refining its hardware for quicker production.
