North Korea completes new railway station at Wonsan-Kalma resort

State media described the 7,000-square-meter station as a benchmark for local railway stations, designed to fulfill its mission, function, and purpose for tourist travel. The Wonsan-Kalma resort, one of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's signature development projects, reportedly opened in June 2025 and has the capacity to host up to 20,000 visitors at a time.

During a visit to the resort in June 2025, Kim Jong-un outlined plans to modernize railway stations in provincial cities nationwide, emphasizing the lessons learned from the Wonsan-Kalma project. North Korea has intensified efforts to attract visitors to the resort, initiating domestic flights from Pyongyang since July 23. According to flight-tracking data, state carrier Air Koryo operates this route twice weekly using Antonov An-148 aircraft.

Pyongyang's state media has also launched a promotional campaign, asserting that tens of thousands of people have visited the resort this summer. KCNA reported on Saturday that the Wonsan-Kalma coastal tourist area is currently experiencing a high volume of visitors from across the country, who are enjoying a Korean-style tourist culture via train or bus.
