SM Entertainment, a prominent South Korean K-pop agency, has established a joint venture with Tencent Music Entertainment Group (TME) to bolster its presence in Chinese-speaking markets. The new entity, named STE, will be headquartered in Beijing and will focus on discovering, developing, and managing Chinese artists.
Zhoumi, known for his role in Super Junior-M, SM Entertainment's China-focused unit, has been appointed as the chief executive officer of STE. This strategic partnership follows a memorandum of understanding signed between the two companies in May, signaling a concerted effort to expand their influence within the Chinese entertainment landscape.
According to SM Entertainment, STE intends to launch a new Chinese idol group within the next two to three years. This initiative will involve conducting auditions to recruit members and subsequently overseeing the group's management in China. The venture will also provide support for existing SM artists hailing from Chinese-speaking regions, such as Renjun of NCT Dream and Yangyang and Xiaojun of WayV.
Zhoumi expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating in a release, "We will present differentiated content and create meaningful results as a bridge between the two companies by combining SM's strengths in intellectual property and content production with an understanding of the Chinese-speaking entertainment markets."
